CLAUDIA TERSTAPPEN ‘Similarities’ at Museum DKM in Duisburg

October 1, 2020

‘Similarities’ at Museum DKM unites works by photographer-ceramicist Claudia Terstappen and land artist Richard Long. DKN Museum explains, “During their travels, both act as seekers who seek out special places. They collect objects that have been given a spiritual meaning and address them in their works – albeit using different techniques and approaches. In the series “Places of worship Japan” (2004), Terstappen documents places that are considered sacred, while Long makes the cultural technique of hiking and walking the subject of his artistic exploration.”

Terstappen photographs something that cannot actually be depicted –  in a sense, a place’s aura. The work, ‘Autumn spirit’ shows trees coloured in autumn hues as a metaphor for the volatility of life and the cycle of renewal. Long, on the other hand, turns his pilgrimages into art and creates works as souvenirs of a spiritual journey. In his installation, the outside space becomes an inside sculpture that works in space and as the space.”

‘Similarities’ runs 1 August 2020 – June 2021 at Museum DKM in Duisburg. Read more about the exhibition here.
