‘In Land, On Water’ was first exhibited in Lottie Consalvo’s 2019 solo show ‘The Aerial View Of An Anthem’. Her work tries to capture ‘psychological points of no return’, where feelings of restlessness, strength and release are made tangible through paint. ‘In Land, On Water’ is structured by painted borders that give a portal-like depth to the canvas and highly gestural brushstrokes. This not only conjures a sense of the artist’s body at work, but also the vast, mysterious depths of the self at work.
In this new work, I mine [my] thoughts and return them to the sea. The pulsating mass that surrounds us. The space beyond the horizon where there is no longer a line to move towards but rather it has been passed or the perspective has shifted. … I stare at the sea and its parts move in slow motion, a dangerous, mysterious matter that my eyes cannot ever fully hold onto. When I imagine the sea consuming the land I am above it and there is a deep brooding song playing in the distance.
Consalvo is a Newcastle-based artist whose abstract paintings and video performances are well-respected for their strength of character. She has held solo shows at Maitland Regional Art Gallery, Heide Museum of Modern Art and Casula Powerhouse. She has also been extensively exhibited in regional galleries including Goulburn, Newcastle, and Lake Macquarie. Formative projects include her selection as artist in residence by Marina Abramović for Kaldor Public Art Project 30.
