EMMA FIELDEN

‘Infinities’ is an engraving printed onto Somerset 300gsm paper, created from the impression of hand-engraved brooches used as printing plates. The notion of infinity extends throughout Fielden’s practice, explored here through the minimalist lines of each square constituting a grid in itself and part of a larger grid. Through this, she explores mathematical and metaphysical concepts using repetitive, sensitive marks. Her meticulous approach to engraving sits at the meeting point between science and poetry, conjuring the Hermann grid optical illusion to meditate on the infinite web of relationships between lines and space.

“Akin to Cantor’s Dust, the work points to the scale of infinity – the infinitely large and the infinitesimally small. It draws on set theory and its infinite infinities. And by breaking down the grid and placing it upon the body, it seeks to make the infinite intimate.”

Emma Fielden is well-regarded for her elegant, minimalist work, which has been recently exhibited at The Lock-Up in Newcastle, the Art Gallery of South Australia, and Patricia Conde Galeria in Mexico City. Notably, Fielden was selected as the 2018 Australian representative for the international Art Omi Residency in New York. She has also been a finalist in awards including the NSW Visual Arts Emerging Fellowship (2017), Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize (2017) and The Blake Prize (2016).
