DANI MARTI

Dust (Pink) is made up of luminous pastel-coloured orbs that have an almost kinetic surface. Dani’s signature road reflector works create abstract ‘paintings’ that flirt with the viewer’s perception through the rhythms of colour interacting with light. The optical effect of the materials changing and rippling according to the movement of the viewer’s body and the light of the space feeds into an awareness of the act of looking. Marti references minimalism, the craft movement, and the sensuality of Baroque.

His use of common industrial materials is grounded in the performative act of making, where the strength of the artist’s body is present on the surface of each ‘painting’. The repetition and seriality of the group reinforces the time and effort required to make each piece by stretching the very physical act of weaving across multiple surfaces. The artist surrenders to his materials, taking direction from the corporeality of ropes, reflectors, beads and scourers in a process that is both tender and arduous. – Alanna Irwin

Dani Marti lives between Barcelona, Spain, and Cessnock, Australia. Fittingly, he has been exhibited across the globe including Singapore, Chile, Spain and across Australia. Marti is also well-known for his large-scale public commissions; notably, a monumental concrete cast of his woven ropes for Westfield on Castlereagh Street Sydney and Time is the fire in which we burn for the Hilton Hotel, with Woods Bagot, in Melbourne.
