Brendan Lee’s works envision fantastical realities and architectural forms through a creative practice situated primarily within drawing, digital modelling and video production. His research draws upon the crystalline object that was expressed in early twentieth century utopian theories. To express and revive these theories in a contemporary context, Lee conjures the affective qualities of physical and digital space that mark out pathways and abstractions of the body. This recalls the vision of German Expressionist architect Bruno Taut, whose enchanting glass constructions aimed to build a transcendental social experience from translucent, modular architecture. Reiterating these utopian precedents, Lee’s drawings and digital works propose a fantastical existence within an imagined crystalline reality.
